Terrors of the Deep: Gothic Seascapes
Plunge into the relationship between waters and monstrosity, and explore what it tells us about ourselves.

The Banshee Labyrinth [Cinema Room], 29-35 Niddry St, Edinburgh EH1 1LG, UK
About the event
From dark sea mists to ghostly acoustics of the deep, the sea engages our senses to hold us in the fast grip of terror. But the push and pull of the waves, the crystal waters, are as enchanting as they are uncanny. Seascapes are sublime spaces, linked with fascination and horror. This lecture — with interactive elements — will take a tour through literature and film’s uncanny seascapes. From Shelley’s Frankenstein to Stoker’s Dracula seascapes explore humanity’s hidden fears, becoming incomprehensible spaces where monstrosity thrives. We plunge into the relationship between waters and monstrosity, and explore what it tells us about ourselves.
